On Thursday at Wangaratta we witnessed something as rare as a Tassie Tiger with brother and sister Alpinova and Eaglesaurus (Tassie Siblings) both scoring maiden wins in their respective races. By Alpine Eagle out of the Testa Rossa mare Novasaurus, the siblings brought up memorable a double for Tasmanian breeder and loyal stable client David Beattie and associates.
Alpinova kicked the day off in the Ovens Kia Wangaratta 2yo Maiden Plate over 1170m where she was sent out the punter’s pick coming off a promising debut at Ballarat. After jumping a little slowly jockey Blaike McDougall was able to give her the gun run just in behind the speed. She got some clear air on the corner when the leader kicked and whilst she was still a little green up the straight, she was simply too good for them. She’s a lovely filly and we’re looking forward to seeing her grow and mature so we’ll tip her out and bring her back in the summer where she’ll chase some nicer races.
It was then over to big brother Eaglesaurus in the Pacific Hire Maiden Plate over 1590m. He’s been a work in progress and Simon and trackwork riders have been working hard to iron out his issues so it was very satisfying to get a win on the board with this horse. After jumping evenly, Blaike McDougall was asked to settle just forward of midfield to enable him to finish off and he did just that. He always travelled sweetly but when he was let off the bridle it’s safe to say there was a few nervous moments. He tried his best to throw the race away on several occasions but his talent got him over the line. He’s going to make a nice horse in time with more education and we’re excited to see where he can get to.
- These days don’t happen without the hard work of everyone in our team so we’d like to thank everyone involved and give a big congratulations to the ownership groups of both horses. A special mention to loyal owner Mark Zahra (No relation nor the jockey!) as well who has clocked up thousands of kilometres this preparation in rain, hail and shine to chase the win for Eaglesaurus. Racing stables don’t exist without the dedication and support of our owners so we really appreciate all of you who attend the races to cheer your horses on.
